School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

The goal of School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) at Millwarra Primary School is to create and maintain a positive and safe learning environment that enhances our school culture where we maximise individual academic, social and emotional growth.

The SWPBS approach is comprised of evidence based behavioural interventions and practices that can be implemented by staff to effectively address the important behavioural needs of students.

Through the implementation of SWPBS, school wide systems are aligned to create an inclusive environment where there is a:

  • Common purpose and approach to behaviour
  • Clear set of positive expectations and behaviours
  • Procedures for teaching expected behaviour
  • Procedures for data collection, ongoing monitoring and evaluation

Strategies to support and teach behaviour

Tier 1- Whole school/class systems and routines to support all students achieve success. These include morning circle, ready to learn plans, classroom environments, SWPBS school values matrix, positive acknowledgement reward system, staged response, visual reminders placed indoor and outdoors, and wellbeing lessons.

Tier 2- Targeted supports. These include group interventions, social skills instruction, morning check-in, behaviour support plans, and progress monitoring.

Tier 3- Individualised supports. These include behaviour support plans, functional behaviour assessments, student support group meetings, and a student action team.

Under this model, it is the role of the teachers (and school community members) to explicitly teach children positive/helpful behaviours and to set explicit behaviour expectations. Lessons are taught at point of need which are identified by the SWPBS team through data analysis. This model focuses on highlighting when students are displaying helpful behaviours and reinforcing these behaviours through a whole school reward system.

Whole School Acknowledgement System- each class work towards a goal which allows them to place a vote on the whole school reward. Students are recognised for displaying behaviours stated in the behaviour matrix’.

We use visuals in each classroom to remind and support the children around desired and expected behaviours.

Teachers use SWPBS explicit lessons in unison with the Respectful Relationships program which focus on the interpersonal and emotional skills that ensure student success.
